About IRENA:
IRENA is an inter-governmental organization, mandated by Governments to promote the widespread adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy. It facilitates and catalyses sharing of best practices and lessons learned regarding policy frameworks, capacity-building, finance mechanisms and other relevant measures for accelerating and expanding the demonstration and deployment of renewable energy technologies.

  • Knowledge of the full range of communications approaches, tools, and methodologies essential to planning and executing effective campaign strategies and programmes, e.g. campaign management, media operations, marketing and promotion, audience outreach, message targeting. 
  • Ability to rapidly analyze and integrate diverse information from varied sources. 
  • Ability to produce a variety of written communications products in a clear, concise style. 
  • Ability to deliver oral presentations to various audiences.

Qualifications
Education:
  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. 
  • A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area.  
  • Broad experience with media relations; stakeholder engagement; community outreach and marketing. Interest in, and enthusiasm for, renewable energy and the global energy transition.
  • Experience initiating pro-active media outreach efforts, proposing and arranging press conferences/media coverage, disseminating materials and experience pitching stories, consulting with press on approach/story angle and other information requests, undertaking appropriate follow-up action and analyzing and reporting on the impact of coverage. 
  • Proven experience drafting, pitching and placing opinion articles in top-tier publications. 
  • Experience with devising and implementing marketing/communications campaigns

Language:
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English is required.  Knowledge of other languages is desirable.

Job Duties:

Under the supervision of the Chief Communications Officer, the Communications Officer
will assist in the development and implementation of IRENA’s internal and external communications strategy and will be responsible for the following duties:
  •     Devises, plans and implements communications programs across IRENA’s core communications efforts.
  •     Drafts articles, press releases, human interest stories and other information materials for both web-based and traditional media, as appropriate.
  •     Prepares written communication materials (e.g. key messages, ad copy, speeches, briefing notes, talking points); produces various non-written communications content (images, video, web pages etc.).
  •     Works with key stakeholders including Members to draft, develop and implement collaborative communications plans, campaigns and outreach strategies.
  •     Recommends appropriate information and communication materials for use in media, and other communication activities; recommends the appropriateness, quality and dissemination of printed and audio-visual materials.
  •     Recommends established contacts, networks, resources and processes to support communication activities; assists in developing and maintaining close collaboration with mass media, as well as with groups and organizations whose support is essential to the achievement of communication objectives.
  •     Prepares background communication and promotional materials for briefing and visits of media and other special interest groups. Assists in the planning, logistic and administrative arrangements for them.
  •     Undertakes activities to promote media coverage such as organizing press conferences, project site visits, facilitating photo coverage and TV footage and utilizing both web-based and traditional media as appropriate; and assists in organizing special events in consultations with key stakeholders, government counterparts, community and partners to support IRENA programme delivery.
  •     Monitors the public perception of IRENA and recommends appropriate action to maintain a positive image for the organization.
  •     Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, and provides advise on appropriate actions/responses.
  •     Performs any other duties as may be required.

IRENA reserves the right to appoint a candidate at a lower level than the advertised level of the post.
1) The amounts for the following benefits are only indicative and subject to periodic adjustments: Post Adjustment (currently 71.5% of the Annual Net Salary), Dependency allowance (US$2,929 per dependent child p.a), non-removal allowance, if applicable (US$2,150 with dependents, US$1,620 without dependents p.a), medical insurance for staff members and dependents, Rental subsidy (currently 45% of the annual rent up to a maximum ceiling of AED 160,000 p.a), Provident Fund, and other entitlements as applicable.
